2004 "Responsibility Matters"-BADD Boating Safety Tour

The Great Circle Route, 30 cities in 30 days-

Jim Carlin, President and Founder of Boaters Against Drunk Driving, National BADD will solo pilot a 14 foot jet-boat called the "Spirit of Battle Creek-USA" across 5,400 miles of waterways in the United States. The career police-officer will promote safe, sober and responsible boating in America with the theme of "Responsibility Matters." The event will launch in Chicago and follow the Illinois Waterway to the Mississippi River, the Gulf of Mexico, Florida’s Okeechobee Canal, and the East Coast to New York City. He will continue north on the Hudson River to the Erie Canal in New York State, the Great Lakes to Michigan, and completion of the boating safety tour back at Burnham Harbor in Chicago. An invitation has been extended to Illinois Senator Adeline J. Geo-Karis, District 31 in Zion, to be present at the launch of the "Spirit of Battle Creek-USA". Senator Geo-Karis has sponsored legislation improving boating safety in Illinois and stated "We cannot talk enough about the area of safe, sober and responsible boating".

Jim has logged over 320,000 miles of safe boating on America’s waterways in the last 25 years piloting jet-ski’s, motorized surfboards, and small craft for numerous boating safety events. This event could not be accomplished if it were not for the invaluable assistance of the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration-NOAA, and numerous city and state marine patrol units throughout the country. This event will also celebrate the 214 years of service by the U.S. Coast Guard formed on August 4, 1790. All these dedicated professionals have improved safety and reduced injuries and deaths on our nation’s waterways and made the boating experience more enjoyable for all of us. This event would also not be possible if it were not for the support of outstanding sponsors like Anheuser-Busch, Oakley, Sebago, Stearns, Valvoline Oil, Waterway Guide, and others. The management in all these corporations support our mutual interest in safe, sober and responsible boating in America. BADD is not against drinking and alcohol consumption. BADD is against drinking and operating a water-craft. We advocate the completion of boating safety courses, filing a float plan, and the wearing of a life jacket (PFD) while on a waterway. BADD also emphasizes another very important theme in safe boating, "Weather, or Not to Boat." By practicing responsibility and being courteous on the waterway we will all "Boat Smart and Boat Safe."
